So, what IS the 'Real Truth'?
Venture on to a social networking website such as Facebook and it's not difficult to find a huge number of groups dedicated to all manner of belief, be it Christianity or Islam (or any number of different 'faiths'). In 'opposition' are a huge number of groups dedicated to discussing atheism and agnosticism. Within those groups debate is positively raging over topics such as Creationism / Intelligent Design, evolution, the 'Big Bang', abiogenesis and a myriad of related arguments.
Many, on both sides of the fence, whether believer or non-believer, tend to argue from at least a certain level of ignorance. Ignorance of both of their own belief system and of the beliefs of the person or persons they debate with.
Why is this so important?
Religion is a huge force in the world. Whilst it is in decline in parts of western Europe, it still has a massive effect. Many non-believers will argue that religion is a force for 'evil', whilst those within their own religions will argue the opposite. Many are worried about the rise of 'creationism' and the fact that the subject is being introduced into schools as a valid topic, whilst other insist it is as valid as 'evolutionism'. Many will argue that Christianity / Islam should determine how people run their lives. Others the opposite. However, as noted above, so many profess a belief one way or the other, without having knowedge of either side of the fence.
Many 'Christians' know as little about the Bible and their religion - and often much less - than their atheist sparring partner. Many arguing that evolution is how we came to be the creatures we are, rather than having been created by an all knowing, loving and wise God, do not understand the topic of evolution to any great level. Much debate centres on the creation of the universe, with one side arguing that only a powerful mind could have brought it into existence and fine tuned it and continues to watch over us. Others will argue that there is no need for a creator, and whilst we don't have all the answers yet, there are very knowledgable humans working on it and hoping to crack the puzzle soon.
This 'little bit of knowledge' tends to make such 'debates' no more than a points scoring excercise, with little or no resolution whatsoever. This is, of course, madness and gets no one anywhere.
So, a central location for all the relevant books, DVDs etc., as recommended by me - and you - might make the debate that little more satisfying. I hope you'll participate and make recommendations of your own.
This may be therefore, the place to get the ammunition to argue your case from those considered to be masters of the craft, debaters such as Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Anthony Flew, Keith Ward, Kent Hovind et al.
On the right are a number of books that can be purchased via Amazon, some used and relatively cheap, others pristine and at typical Amazon discounted prices. Each of these has either been read - and is recommended - by the writer of this web site and others. It will be added to as others submit their own recommendations, which can be done via the contact page.
On the left you will find a listing of books that Amazon
recommends, based on a selection of keywords including
evolution, creationism, religion etc. Many of these
will not have been read by the author of this site.
If you have read any of these, please feel free to use
the contact page
to recommend them and they will be considered seriously
and added here if relevant.
